It has been the case across history that interiors and fashion design often compliment one another. This Spring (although I'm listening to neighbors shovel snow outside...) I have intense Spring fever. I feel as though fashion is really rolling and I'm loving the correlation to interiors as well.
Interiors or Fashion: Structured exaggerated ruffles, bold and big statements, stripes, and rattan!? BOTH!
Making a statement is everything is in in fashion with bell sleeves, and ruffles, and bows! (Guys, the BOWS!!) we will see interiors take the same elements and incorporate them into the chicest interiors. A subtle ruffle at the edge of a slipper chair in a simple ticking stripe. Rattan handbags are (super!) the rage for summer- and so is rattan furniture! I used to hate rattan- but throw some blue and white stripes and a matching floral design against it (a la Mark D Sikes latest collection below) and I am all in. For your sun room or your poolside patio. I love floral statements in rooms as well-- big branches of cherry blossoms or olive leaves and eucalyptus. The same elements we love, only bigger and bolder and a lot of it. I think the trick here is to choose one element to go big and bold on- and allow the others to be very paired down and simple. I love that ticking stripes are almost being used as a neutral or a texture in some instances.
Note the bell sleeve with the subtle texture of a suede legging; a bold wallpaper with simple drapes; a huge floral in an otherwise monotone and sleek space. Bring the outdoors on in and tie the bows around your ankles and hop on into the warm weather in store for us!!
All of these pretty trends are making me EXTRA excited to go to the Architectural Digest Home Show this Thursday to illustrate DIFFA's Dining by Design displays. Designers from all over come and set up a dining room space that are always incredible. last year my favorites were Kate Spade and Lee Jofa's Collaboration and Mark D Sike's display.
I can't wait to see and illustrate some new and fun displays. Here's what I would have designed this year if I had done a booth.
Note the BIG bows! The stripes! The Floor Plans! The BIG floral! And the ginger jars!
AD Home Show Here I come! :)
