The Story Behind the Pattern

The Chippendale Chair was the first chair I can recall distinguishing from all the other chairs. Long before I sat sketching in my History of Furniture classes or inspecting gold leaf flourishes on chests of drawers at the Lourve, I knew the Chippendale chair.
The Great Fire in London in the early 1700s sparked a new wave of lighter designed furniture that was easier and faster to produce.  Thomas Chippendale was a cabinet maker, and while he did not himself create the designs for the pieces which now hold his name, he did standardize measurements of the design. It was the first time that someone who was not a monarch lent his name to a period style.
I love the Chippendale style because it is a symbol of how design is always evolving to better serve its purpose in a beautiful way.
